Joseph is the unsung hero in the Christmas drama. He doesn’t even get a speaking part in the Bible but his role was pivotal in shaping and sculpting God’s Son. Joseph is the patron saint of all those who without fanfare or fuss, quietly do their duty.

Far from being the ogre in the Christmas story, Bethlehem’s inn keeper gave the holy family all he had: a warm, welcoming room where the animals were kept on cold nights. But that little roomed proved perfect for the occasion because with the God who meets us in Jesus, “even a little room is enough.”

Sometimes God says, “No,” as when God told David he could not build the Temple. But God’s “No” is always in the service of God’s “Yes!”, namely, God’s fierce determination to grow us into people more like Jesus.
